An LMS is a software system that enables the digital management and administration of educational processes. The functions of LMSs include uploading and editing learning materials, monitoring student performance, creating and evaluating tests and exams, and providing a means of communication between teachers and students (Shakeel, 2011, Kats, 2010).

LMSs usually have a variety of modules that allow learners to personalise their learning and teachers to easily monitor students' progress. The personalised learning paths provided by LMSs allow learners to progress at their own pace and learn the subjects that interest them most. LMSs provide a secure learning environment, as student data and learning materials can only be accessed by users with the appropriate permissions. The disadvantages of LMSs include high prices, higher maintenance requirements and more stringent curriculum and assessment requirements, which require teachers and students to have more flexibility in the learning process (Turnbull, et al. 2021 and Kasim, et al. 2016).

  • Curriculum management: the LMS allows instructors to upload, manage and share course materials with students. Course materials can be created in video, presentation, document, image or any other format.
  • Test and assessment management. Students receive results in the LMS and instructors can also track student progress.
  • Communication. Students can communicate with instructors and peers via email, chat or forums.
  • Participation tracking: the LMS allows instructors to track students' participation in the course. Instructors can track how often students log in and how well they are performing.
  • Administration: the LMS allows administrators to manage user accounts, courses, database and other functions.
  • Integration: the LMS can be integrated with other applications, such as video or conferencing software, to provide students with a complete online learning experience.

These features form the basis of LMSs and enable teachers and students to communicate and learn effectively in the online space. A common feature of LMSs is that they enable educational institutions and companies to offer online courses and coursesware, manage learner accounts, assess learner performance, and allow instructors to upload and manage online course materials and assignments. A wide range of features of LMSs include managing learning schedules, setting learning objectives and outcomes, monitoring learning activities and learner activity, and supporting social communication.
