Researchers of discourse analysis generally agree with the taxonomy of Halliday and Hasan (1976) in that the most important referring items are personal pronouns and demonstratives, including the definite article (e.g., Quirk et al., 1985; Tolcsvai, 2001; Szikszainé, 2006). Hungarian authors tend to include time and place as semantic frames, verbal inflections and other suffixes among the items that contribute to establishing referential cohesion. Halliday and Hasan (1976) discuss comparatives among the forms of reference, but the status of this category needs to be re-considered concerning the analysis of academic registers.
