This section deals with the object of study, namely text, to establish how a seemingly insignificant linguistic feature of text, reference, permeates the discourse structure and the characteristics of the academic genre; a genre that is also a form of creating knowledge. Moving on to text producers, the discussion will be oriented towards why it is more meaningful to talk about language expertise in EAP than to remain faithful to the traditional native versus non-native distinction.
